UTM Link Builder for Google Business Profile
Most clicks from your Google Business Profile land in GA4 as plain Direct or Organic traffic. You cannot tell them apart from anything else. Enter your website URL below and this tool builds tagged links for your website button, posts, appointment link, menu, products and offers. Copy them, export a CSV, and paste them into your profile.
Use the page you want people to land on. Existing query parameters are kept. Old utm_ values are replaced.
For businesses with more than one profile. It becomes utm_content.
Your tagged links
Your links appear here once you enter a valid website URL.
Values are lowercased and spaces become hyphens. Nothing is uploaded. Open each link once to make sure the page loads before you paste it.
Custom UTM builder
Needs a valid URL plus source, medium and campaign.

Why GBP Clicks Get Lost in GA4
A lot of profile clicks come from the Google Maps app and from phones. Those visits often arrive with little referrer data. GA4 then files them under Direct, or mixes them into Organic Search with your normal blue link traffic. Your Business Profile Performance screen shows website clicks, but it cannot tell you what those people did once they got to your site.
A UTM tag fixes that. It is a short set of labels added to the end of a link. When someone clicks, GA4 reads the labels and records the visit with the source, medium and campaign you chose. Now you can see how many GBP visitors booked, called from the site or filled out a form.
โ Without tags
https://example.com/Shows up as (direct) / (none) or google / organic. Same row as everything else.
โ With tags
https://example.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-websiteShows up as google / organic with the campaign gbp-website, so you can filter it.
The UTM Values This Tool Uses
| Parameter | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | The visit starts on Google Search or Maps. | |
| utm_medium | organic or gbp | Organic keeps it in the Organic Search channel. gbp is easier to spot. |
| utm_campaign | gbp-website, gbp-post... | Names the exact profile link that was clicked. |
| utm_content | henderson-nv | Optional. Tells locations apart. |
Organic or gbp for the medium?
GA4's default channel group puts a session in Organic Search when the medium exactly matches "organic" or the source is on its list of search sites. So google / organic always counts as Organic Search, and your channel totals do not change after you add the tags.
I use organic for most clients. Pick gbp if a client wants profile traffic to jump out in a plain source / medium report. Since the source stays google, those visits should still sort into Organic Search, but check your own report the first week. Mixing both across profiles is the real mistake.
Where to Paste Each Link in Your Profile
Sign in, search your business name on Google, and open the profile editor. Which fields you see depends on your primary category.
Website button
gbp-website
Edit profile, then Contact, then Website
Posts (Updates)
gbp-post
Add update, then Add a button, then the Link field
Appointment link
gbp-appointment
Edit profile, then Contact, then Appointment links
Menu link
gbp-menu
Edit profile, then the Menu link field (food businesses)
Products
gbp-products
Edit products, then open a product, then the button link
Offers
gbp-offer
Add offer, then Link to redeem offer
โน๏ธ Google may review a profile after you edit the website field. That is normal. If you use a listings platform that pushes data to your profile, add the tags there, or it will overwrite your edit on its next sync.
How to See GBP Traffic in GA4
Give it a day or two after you paste the links. Then follow these steps from Google's Traffic acquisition report help page.
Open the report
In GA4, click Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
Switch the dimension
Click the dropdown above the first table column and pick Session source / medium.
Find your rows
Look for google / organic or google / gbp. Use the search box above the table to filter.
Split by link
Click the plus icon next to the dimension and add Session campaign. Now gbp-website and gbp-post sit on their own rows.
For more than one location, add Session manual ad content as the secondary dimension instead. That is where GA4 shows your utm_content value, like mesa or tempe.
Mistakes That Break GBP Tracking
I have cleaned these up on client accounts more times than I can count.
Mixed case
Google's UTM help page says parameter values are case sensitive. Google and google become two rows. The builder lowercases everything for you.
Redirects
Some redirects drop the query string. Link to the final URL, with the right trailing slash. Our indexability checker shows if a page redirects.
Tagging internal links
Never put UTM tags on links inside your own site. Each click starts a new session and wipes out the real source.
No canonical tag
Tagged URLs can get crawled. A self referencing canonical tag on the page keeps the plain URL as the main one.
Tracking More Than One Location
Say a dental group has offices in Henderson and Summerlin. Each profile should point to its own office page, like /henderson/ and /summerlin/. Run the builder once per office, type the office name in the location box, and export each CSV. Every link then carries utm_content=henderson or utm_content=summerlin.
Keep a single sheet with every tagged URL per profile. When someone changes a page path next year, you will know exactly which profile field to update.
Planning those location pages first? The service area page planner helps map them out. Then add LocalBusiness markup with the schema markup builder.
Frequently Asked Questions
What UTM parameters should I use for Google Business Profile?
Use utm_source=google, utm_medium=organic and a utm_campaign that names the link, like gbp-website or gbp-post. Add utm_content with the city or store code if you run more than one profile. Keep every value lowercase. Google says UTM values are case sensitive, so "Google" and "google" show up as two rows in your reports.
Should utm_medium be organic or gbp?
Pick organic if you want GBP visits to stay inside the Organic Search channel in GA4. GA4 puts any session with the medium "organic" there. Pick gbp if you care more about spotting the visits fast in Session source / medium. Both work. The rule that matters is using the same choice on every profile you manage.
Will UTM tags hurt my local rankings?
There is no sign from Google that a tagged website link on your profile changes how you rank. The tags only tell your analytics where the visit came from. Two things can go wrong, though. A redirect may drop the tags, and some sites forget a canonical tag, so tagged copies of a page get crawled. Check both once.
Why does GBP traffic show as direct in GA4?
Many GBP clicks happen inside the Google Maps app or on phones that pass little or no referrer. GA4 then has nothing to go on and files the visit under Direct, or blends it into Organic Search with normal results. UTM tags fix that because the source and medium travel inside the URL itself.
Where do I see GBP visits in GA4?
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Change the table dimension to Session source / medium and look for google / organic or google / gbp. Then add Session campaign as a secondary dimension to split the website button from posts. Expect a delay, because new data can take a day or so to show up fully.
Can I add UTM tags to my GBP phone number or call button?
No. UTM tags only work on web links that load a page with your analytics tag. Calls and direction requests do not open your site, so GA4 never sees them. Track those inside the Performance section of your Business Profile instead. If calls matter a lot, a tracking number is the usual answer, but list your main number as primary.
Do I need different links for each location?
Yes, if you want to compare them. Send each profile to its own location page when you have one. Then add the city or store code as utm_content. A plumber with shops in Mesa and Tempe could use utm_content=mesa and utm_content=tempe. One GA4 report then shows which profile sends more visits.
My URL already has a question mark. Will the tags still work?
Yes. A URL can only have one question mark, and any extra parameters join with an ampersand. This builder reads your URL, keeps the parameters already in it and adds the UTM tags in the right spot. It also replaces any old utm_ values, so you never end up with two utm_source values in one link.
