GBP Category Finder for Google Business Profile

Your primary category is one of the first things to get right on a Google Business Profile. Type your main service below. The finder searches 4,038 categories, suggests a primary with a short reason and lists additional ones you can add. Each result shows the gcid, and you can export your picks to CSV.

Use the words a customer would say. Short forms like ac, vet or roofer work too.

Separate with commas. Each one gets matched for the additional categories.

Primary vs Additional GBP Categories

Every profile gets one primary category. It says what the business is. Google's category help page tells you to pick the most specific option on the list, and gives the example of Nail salon instead of Salon. The primary also controls some profile features, such as menu links for restaurants or booking buttons for salons.

Additional categories cover the other parts of your business. Google's bulk upload help page says you can add up to 9 of them. The same help pages ask you not to pick a category for every product or service. So a plumber who also clears drains can add Drainage service, but should skip Plumbing supply store.

Primary (1)

What most customers hire you for. Make it as specific as the list allows. Example: an AC company in Phoenix where most calls are repairs.

gcid:air_conditioning_repair_service

Additional (up to 9)

Other work you really do. The same AC company might add HVAC contractor, Heating contractor and Air duct cleaning service if it offers those.

gcid:hvac_contractor, gcid:heating_contractor

How to Choose Your Primary Category

This is the process I run for a new client before touching anything else on the profile.

Step 1

Name the money service

Ask which job brings in the most revenue or the most calls. For a roofer that is usually replacement, so Roofing contractor fits.

Step 2

Search in plain words

Type the service the way a customer would. The finder reads short forms like ac, vet and roofer and ranks exact matches first.

Step 3

Check the top map results

Search your main term on Google Maps in your city. Note the primary category on the top three profiles and compare it with the suggestion.

Step 4

Confirm in the editor

Open your profile, go to Edit profile, then Business category, and type the name. Save only what Google still offers.

Category Mistakes I See on Local Profiles

Most of these take five minutes to fix once you spot them.

๐ŸŽฏ

A broad primary

Contractor or Restaurant when a more specific option exists. A taco shop should try Mexican restaurant first.

Filling all 9 slots

More is not better. Each extra category should match a page or service on your site. Our service area page planner helps you map those pages.

๐Ÿช

Store categories on a service business

Labels ending in store or supplier are for places that sell goods over a counter. A plumber who only does service calls does not need them.

๐Ÿ”

Constant edits

Changing categories can send a profile into review. Decide, make the change once, then give it a few weeks before you judge it.

โ„น๏ธ This finder uses LocalSEOFlow's maintained list. Google changes categories over time and some depend on your country, so always confirm the final names in your Business Profile editor.

What to Do After You Set Categories

Categories work best when your website agrees with them. If your primary is Air conditioning repair service, you want a page about AC repair that names your city. Add LocalBusiness markup to that page with the schema markup builder so the business type in your code matches the profile.

Then keep the profile active. Ask happy customers for reviews with a Google review link, and tag your website button with the GBP UTM builder so you can see the visits your profile sends in GA4.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many categories can a Google Business Profile have?

One primary category and up to 9 additional categories, so 10 in total. Google states the limit of 9 additional categories in its bulk upload help page. You do not have to use all of them. Add only the ones that describe services you really sell, since extra categories can bring in calls you cannot help.

What is the most important GBP category?

The primary category. It tells Google what your business is at its core, and it decides which features show on your profile, like menus or booking links. Google advises choosing the most specific option, so a nail salon picks Nail salon over Salon. Additional categories add context but do not replace a wrong primary.

What is a gcid?

A gcid is the ID Google uses for a category, written like gcid:hvac_contractor. You will see it in the page source of some profiles and in a few audit tools. When you edit your profile, you pick the category by its name, not the ID. The finder shows both so you can match what you see in audits.

Why can I not find a category in my Business Profile editor?

Google adds, renames and retires categories, and some only appear in certain countries or languages. A category in this list may not show for your profile. Type a few words of the name into the editor and pick from what Google offers. If it is gone, use the closest general category instead.

Can I create my own GBP category?

No. Google says you cannot create a custom category, and you must pick from its list. If nothing fits your exact service, choose a more general one. A company that only installs EV chargers, for example, might use Electrician and describe the charger work in the business description and services section.

Should I copy the categories my competitors use?

Look at them, but do not copy blindly. Check the top three profiles in the map results for your main search term. If they all share a primary category you skipped, test it. Still, only add categories for work you do. A roofer that does not clean gutters should not list Gutter cleaning service.

How often should I review my GBP categories?

A quick check every few months is enough for most local businesses. Also look again when you add a new service or open a location. Google changes its category list without much notice, so a new and more specific option may show up for your trade. Changing categories can trigger a profile review, so make edits in one go.

Is this the official Google category list?

No. It is the category list LocalSEOFlow maintains for its tools, and Google may add or drop categories at any time. Treat the results as a starting point, then confirm each pick in your editor before you save. The CSV export helps you keep a record of what you chose.
