How to Create a KML File in Three Steps
Most people finish in under five minutes, even with a list of twenty offices.
Add your locations
Click the map to drop pins, type a latitude and longitude, or upload a CSV with name, description, url, lat and lng columns. Each pin gets its own editable name, note and link.
Mark your service area
Pick a radius in miles or kilometers around a center point, or switch to polygon mode and click the corners of the area you cover. You can skip this if you only need pins.
Download and import
The tool checks that the XML is well formed, then gives you a KML or a zipped KMZ. Import either one into My Maps or Google Earth.
Import Your File into My Maps or Google Earth
Both apps are free and only need a Google account.
Import into a new map
- 1.Go to mymaps.google.com and sign in.
- 2.Click Create a new map.
- 3.In the left panel, click Import under the untitled layer. For a second file, click Add layer first.
- 4.Upload your KML or KMZ and click Select.
- 5.Rename the map and the layer so they match your business name.
- 6.Click Share and turn on public access if you want to link to the map from your site.
Limits from Google's My Maps help page: 5 MB per unzipped KML or KMZ and 2,000 rows per import.
Open in Earth on the web or desktop
- 1.Open earth.google.com/web.
- 2.On the home screen, click New, then Import file to project.
- 3.Choose Upload from device and pick your KML or KMZ. Earth saves it as a new project in your Google Drive.
- 4.Just want a quick look? Click Open local KML editor at the bottom left, then Open KML from device.
- 5.Click any pin to see its description and link.
- 6.On Google Earth Pro for desktop, use File, then Open, and select the KML or KMZ.
βΉοΈ If nothing shows up, zoom out. A pin with swapped latitude and longitude lands on the other side of the planet, often in Antarctica.
KML or KMZ: Which One Should You Download?
| Feature | KML | KMZ |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Plain XML text | Zip holding doc.kml |
| File size | Larger | Smaller |
| Open in a text editor | Yes | No, unzip first |
| My Maps and Google Earth | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Editing, sitemaps, code | Email and uploads |
My usual pick
I keep the KML for my own records because I can read it and fix a typo in any text editor. I send the KMZ to clients. It is smaller and nobody is tempted to open it in Word.
What Local Businesses Use KML Files For
A KML file is just a portable map. Here is where I see it pay off for real clients.
Service area maps
An HVAC company in Las Vegas can show a 25 mile radius around its shop on a public My Maps page and embed it on the service area page.
Multi location brands
A dental group with nine offices around Dallas can upload one CSV and get every office pinned with its own booking link.
Crew and route planning
A landscaper in Tampa can share the map with crews so everyone sees which neighborhoods are in and which are out.
Client reports
Agencies can hand a client a clear picture of where their customers are and where the city pages should focus.
Planning city pages
Draw the area first, then plan pages for the towns inside it with our service area page planner.
Google Earth checks
Open the file in Google Earth to check that the boundary you promise customers matches the roads you really drive.
Does My Maps or KML Help Local SEO?
You will find gigs that promise top rankings from thousands of My Maps pins and KML files. I would not pay for them. Here is what the evidence says.
β Not a confirmed ranking factor
Google has never said My Maps or KML files affect Map Pack rankings. Whitespark tested My Maps citations on a real business and saw no ranking change. Practitioners on Local Search Forum have been skeptical of KML sitemaps for years.
β Useful as a supporting asset
A clear map can still help as a supporting signal and a better page. It shows people where you work, makes your service area page easier to trust, and keeps your team on the same boundary. That is a fine reason to build one.
The work that moves local rankings is less exciting. Keep your Business Profile complete, earn real reviews, and build helpful location pages. Add LocalBusiness schema with your areaServed, and make sure Google can find every page through a clean XML sitemap.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a KML file?
A KML file is a plain text map file written in XML. It stores places, lines and shapes with their names and descriptions. Google created the format for Google Earth, and it is now an open standard run by the Open Geospatial Consortium. Google My Maps, Google Earth, QGIS and most GPS apps can open it.
What is the difference between KML and KMZ?
A KMZ is a zipped KML. Inside the zip sits one main file named doc.kml, plus any images it uses. KMZ files are smaller, so they are easier to email or upload. Both hold the same map data. This tool gives you both, and My Maps and Google Earth accept either one.
Does a KML file or My Maps help local rankings?
There is no proof that it does. Google has never named My Maps or KML as a ranking factor, and Whitespark found no ranking change after a test with thousands of My Maps pins. A map can still help as a supporting asset. It shows customers where you work and backs up the service area on your site.
How do I import a KML file into Google My Maps?
Open mymaps.google.com and create a new map. In the left panel, click Import under the untitled layer, or add a new layer first. Upload your KML or KMZ and click Select. Your pins and service area show up right away. You can then rename the layer and share the map.
How big can my file be?
Google says My Maps accepts KML and KMZ files up to 5 MB once unzipped, and up to 2,000 rows per import. This tool stops at 2,000 locations and warns you if the KML passes 5 MB. A file with a few hundred pins and one service area is usually well under 200 KB.
Why is my circle a polygon?
KML has no circle shape. Every radius has to be saved as a polygon with many points around the edge. This tool uses 72 points on a true geodesic circle, so it looks round at any zoom level in My Maps and Google Earth. Distances follow the curve of the earth, not a flat map.
What format should my CSV use?
Use a first row with the headers name, description, url, lat and lng. Latitude and longitude must be decimal numbers, such as 36.1699 and -115.1398. Wrap any text that holds commas in double quotes. Rows with missing or impossible coordinates are skipped, and the tool tells you which row numbers it dropped.
Are my locations uploaded anywhere?
No. The map, the KML code and the KMZ zip are all built inside your browser. Your list of addresses, links and notes never leaves your device. The only outside requests are the map tiles from OpenStreetMap, which load the same way they would on any web map.
Put Your Service Area on the Map
Add your locations, draw the area you cover and download a file that opens in My Maps on the first try.
